Mixset: NR.050 with Solarity

By Fredrik • Aug 11th, 2010 • Category: Cuepoint Recommends, Mixsets, Uncategorized

050

Solarity are the much-hyped duo of Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman, both born and raised in London.

Since their very first release appeared in the record crates of some of the world’s most popular DJs in July 2008, Solarity have been proving themselves as a shining beacon of innovation in an often stagnant musical world. In a time in dance music where genre continues to be obsessed over, Solarity have been pioneering their unique sound with a healthy disregard for categories and labels. Their music takes the best aspects of techno, house, trance and everything in between, fusing it together in a potent mix that is full of both musicality and emotion. From hypnotic grooves and understated melodies, to epic breakdowns and mind-bending electronics, their music has been eagerly winning over fans on a global level, DJs and clubbers alike.

Headline names from traditionally separate corners of the dance music world have been championing their sound, including such diverse acts as Sasha, John Digweed, Laurent Garnier, Armin Van Buuren, Jody Wisternoff and Dubfire. With a stream of releases and gigs scheduled for the near future, this duo are quickly moving up the ranks to become some of the brightest up and coming talents in dance music.

Mixset: NR.049 with Henrik B

By Fredrik • Jul 7th, 2010 • Category: Cuepoint Recommends, Mixsets

049

Henrik B is a man of many talents, who now at the peak of his game continually delivers the goods both on & off the dancefloor through his trademark epic productions. He originally made a name for himself in the techno community, releasing tracks on key labels such as Drumcode, Primate & Corb. With the continually blurring lines between House & Techno, it wasn’t too long before Henrik’s productions crossed genres and he began to work closely with the likes of Angello, Prydz and the other key players.

From there as they say the rest is history… the last 3 years have taken Henrik on a very prosperous & profile building ride. Remixing & releasing for such institutional labels as Size, Pryda & Positiva, he has also supplied remixes for the legendary Groove Armada, Cicada & Stonebridge… the list goes on! Henrik is now an integral piece of the Joia & Nero Records family. He’s delivered uplifting vocal tracks with Gadjo vocalist Alexandra Prince, and continually impressed with his remake of ‘Soul Heaven’, remix of ‘Strike Me Down’, and his recent EP ‘Klyftamon’ & ‘Surefire’’… look out for his new jam set to drop shortly… ‘Waenern & Wettern EP

As a measure of his current stature in the industry, Henrik has also crossed over the UK shores to Defected – his epic remix of the Shapeshifters reinvented ‘Chime’ was played the World over, and his forthcoming remix of Soulsearcher ‘Can’t Get Enough’ shows testament to the results he delivers. Set for release early 2009 to celebrate Defected 10 year anniversary.

Mixset: NR.048 with Sebastien Drums

By Fredrik • Jun 11th, 2010 • Category: Cuepoint Recommends, Mixsets

048

At the age of 11 Sebastien fell in love with electronic music and he was influenced by the french touch wave (daft punk, cassius, bob sinclar, thomas bangalter, antoine clamaran) he later decided to start deejaying. In 2002 Sebastien won an award on “Fun DJ Tour” arranged by Fun Radio, this made him level up and got him a weekly show on the channel between 2004 & 2005.

Later on Sebastien started to produce and that’s when things started to happen. His first release “I Just Want To Be’ on the famous label Congos got remixed by Antoine Clamaran and Kobbe which received support from DJ’s such as Laidback Luke, Norman Doray and more.

Since that he has made collaborations with a lot of big DJ’s / Producers like Alex Gaudino, David Vendetta, Celeda, Dj Ralph, Avicii, Dim Chris, Norman Doray, Tom Novy, Jerry Ropero and a lot more.

Keep an eye on this young talent, because he’s on a roll now.

Mixset: NR.047 with Claes Rosen

By Fredrik • Apr 30th, 2010 • Category: Cuepoint Recommends, Mixsets

047

Whilst being known for pushing the boundaries of dubstep together with his production partner Ola Naslund going under the guise of L-Wiz, Claes Rosen has been establishing himself as the “man of melodies” who never ceases to astonish his listeners.

Being born in Sweden, Claes is known for having a very eclectic and atmospheric sound that shows off a quality of production that is rarely heard nowadays. Claes’s impressive production skills have taken form as an instant and relentless reaction to the absence of electronic music that shimmers with the presence of melodies – which has given him one of the most sought after epithets in the world of music; to have an own “sound”. Taking use of his skills Claes partially creates music stretching far beyond his invisible boundaries, regardless if it’s deep house or music for Swedish TV-commercials.

Creating music that takes your thoughts to a late night city full of life, the sound of one of the most melodic producers in the business clearly has a distinctive touch and sense of rhythm surrounding every note finding its way to the listener. Claes’s clever and forward thinking approach to electronic music has rapidly taken his name to the utmost stratum of producers, and to many, his a name is synonymous to the finest music within the genre of progressive house and trance.

Claes is undoubtedly a diligent and at the same time diverse producer that for a long time has been supported by the biggest names in the game, maintaining an image as an unfailing artist of living and stunning music.

Mixset: NR.046 with Solomun

By Fredrik • Apr 17th, 2010 • Category: Cuepoint Recommends, Mixsets

046

The word industries is often overused when it comes to describing artists in dance music and even when correctly used its rarely a sign of artistic quality.

When it comes to Solomun however, its bang on the mark and has no negative implications for artistic quality. The Hamburg-based, Bosnian-born Croatian has played a major role in redefining European house music in recent years via productions, remixes and DJing which take the very building blocks of house and deftly reconstruct them with a decidedly modern twist.

This contribution to house is partly drawn from a hefty touring schedule gracing the worlds finest clubs alongside an impeccable string of tracks and remixes for the likes of Buzzin Fly, Freerange, Get Physical, Phil E, Mobilee, Dessous, Compost, Four:Twenty and his own Diynamic imprint but it doesnt stop there.

Having started Diynamic just five years ago alongside long-term friend Adriano Trolio, Solomun has set about developing and nurturing his outlets for music as much as the music itself. Now, Diynamic enjoys the sort of reverence usually reserved for labels three times its age and has been instrumental in allowing some of the new talents in electronic music to shine. Stimming, HOSH, Ost and Kjex, Uner and Solomun himself are just a handful of the artists who have benefitted from their output being wrapped in the labelԳ distinctive sleeves and the Diynamic appeal shows no sign of waning.

Despite a hugely hands on ad attentive role in developing Diynamic and its roster, Solomun has also added the roles of Promoter, Radio Host and Club Owner to his list of job titles and each of these endeavours has seen him succeed and create a formidable reputation for himself.

A weekly radio show syndicated to Ibiza Global Radio, Proton and Russia Radiotakt provides yet another platform for some Solomun passion, and his newly acquired EGO Club in Hamburg has been the logical step on from creating some of the best parties in the notoriously competitive club scene in the city. These extensions of his own recording and DJ career certainly show complete dedication to his DIY cause and the music that fuelled its necessity but the formula for the success of each of these extra-curricular activities can be attributed purely to talent.

This talent is pretty unquestionable, too. From the army of high profile fans through to the critically acclaimed 2009 debut LP, Dance Baby, which saw the likes of Mixmag, Electronic Beats and even itunes list in their top albums of the year, the responses to Solomun material are unusually unanimous. If the industry and press mean nothing, then just look to the dancefloors of Watergate, Warung Beach Club, Studio80, D-Edge or EGO where Solomun keeps countless clubbers enraptured with his sounds at Diynamic residencies on a regular basis.

Despite an intimidating amount of roles to balance, Solomun does so much in the same way as he manages the plethora of influences on his music, with a deft touch, a smile on his face and real honest commitment to Doing It Yourself.

Mixset: NR.044 with Roberto Rodriguez

By Fredrik • Mar 1st, 2010 • Category: Cuepoint Recommends, Mixsets

044

Jori Hulkkonen, Jesper Dahlbäck, Roberto Rodriguez, Trentemøller… sounds wrong to you? Actually, it isn’t… Roberto fits perfectly well into that list of great northern producers, not only because he really is Scandinavian (grown up in Helsinki, with a Spanish father and a Finnish mother), but also due to his both modest and highly professional attitude and his long grown involvement with what we could call the “Nordic scene”.

Speaking of the Nordic scene: maybe you actually remember those warehouse parties in the late 80s full of Acidhouse and Detroit Techno – that was where Roberto first got into that funk infected old-school vibe, the foundation for his career as a true dancefloor shaker, remixing Jay Shepheard, Terry Lee Brown Junior, Tigerstripes, Estreo, Crazy P, Moritz Piske, Vanessa Daou or, most recently, Yoko Ono.

Over the years, Roberto not only collected releases on Compost, Freerange, Laka, Sonarkollektiv, Plastic City, 2020 Vision, Delusions of Grandeur or Moodmusic, but also formed various projects, covering all kinds of music: Acid Kings to satisfy his lust for live performance with the Roland TB 303, Robbyn Rhodes & Track ‘n’ Field for his relaxed music tendencies; the Future Beat Investigators followed the Detroit heritage and the Bermuda project came back to Cosmic & Italohouse.

With a pertinent mix of soulful, funky House Music, Roberto has been steadily building his career since the mid 90s, and finally the international dance circus seems to be prepared for his sound, his effective productions, impeccable Dj & Live Performance. Looks like he’s finally about to get what he deserves.

This year has started very well for Roberto, this Friday (the 5th of March) he’s attending the famous venue 360 in Dubai. For us who can’t attend the event should definitely try this set out, he’s worth it!

Mixset: NR.042 with Mason

By Fredrik • Jan 29th, 2010 • Category: Cuepoint Recommends, Mixsets

042

Every now and again one of those records comes around that defies being pigeon holed and given a label. Mason burst onto the dance scene with their groundbreaking tune Exceeder back in 2006. The record swiftly went from destroying dance floors to tearing it up the Worlds charts and laying the foundations for more forward thinking music. This record, along with most of what Mason produced since falls into the same category. Its not about making records for a particular set of Djs or scene but just good honest music! As a result Masons tunes are played by a huge array of decksman from Pete Tong and Zane Lowe (BBC Radio 1) to Fat Boy Slim, Eric Prydz and Carl Cox. Using Iasons classical violin training coupled with a love of diverse music and a hi-tech apprenticeship in a ring tone sweatshop, together with his studio and live partner Coen, a man fixated with ancient synths and playing in rock bands and a mean vocalist to boot, the Mason boys are now forging their own unique path. The duo have the musical arsenal required to make everything from filthy late night dance club bombs to daytime radio anthems. These Dutchmen are unpredictable in both what is played in the club and what is created in the studio.

The Mason sound takes a great understanding of melody and fuses it with technological know-how sheer musicianship and dance floor savvy. It is dance music for the thinking man, but not so clever to be alienating and dull. A debut artist album is taking shape at the moment and features some interesting styles and flavours as well as guests such as NYC rapping legends ( Run) DMC and Kurtis Blow, Grammy nominated and UK number 1 album artist Sam Sparro, renowned singer-songwriter Matt Hales ( AKA Aqualung) , Massive Attack collaborator Debbie Clare and the frontman from cult Belgian act dEUS, Tom Barman.
With a Worldwide hit record under their belt for Data/Ministry Of Sound as well as numerous releases and remixes for labels like Great Stuff, Skint, Pickadoll and Brique Rouge Mason continue to garner respect from above as well as under ground. Mason has recently lent his sound to remix on numerous artists including Moby, Gabriella Cilmi, Hadouken and Robyn. 2009 also sees the launch of Masons label, Animal Language and a regular party under the same name in Amsterdam. The imprint is already making fans of the likes of Carl Cox, Nic Fancuilli and Mylo.

Humour is a long forgotten part of music and something Mason is keen to re-introduce as a key ingredient. Anyone listening to his de-mix of Exceeder being replayed by a brass band will know the boys arent taking things too seriously. Forthcoming album track titles such as Who Killed Trance and Bigboy Exercises are also refreshingly tongue-in-cheek and every track on his Animal Language label will carry a re-furb, a re-interpretation in a totally different musical style, be it speed metal, Mariachi or Balkan!

Mixset: NR.041 with Martin Eyerer

By Fredrik • Jan 23rd, 2010 • Category: Cuepoint Recommends, Mixsets

041

When Martin Eyerer tells a story, everybody listens. Martin reports of his journeys throughout the continents, telling stories of wild escapades in a taxi across the Brazilian jungle through to the impressions of Earth’s capitals and the colourful array of citizens that inhabit them, and obviously of his many Gigs in these foreign lands. Those foreign places quickly become familiar territory when he sets up his digital DJ-system and starts to play that thumping first track because what he plays is groovy Electro-Tech House and the sound is a world language of its own that is euphorically absorbed through sweaty pores and pumping glands.

Martin Eyerer is not a laptop artist, but a true musician. His high-end studio meets the highest requirements and has become an interdisciplinary interface for mastering (whether it is Hip Hop, Pop or Electronic) and he is also co-producing several mainstream acts (Eyerer e.g.became a gold record in UK). On top of all this, the Tech-House Posse around him like Gui Boratto,Oliver Koletzki, Toni Rios, Stephan Hinz, Namito, Chopstick, Oliver Klein or Robert Babicz come to his house to jam. It is a small circle of friends who share the same musical interest and who put 200% in to every release they do.

In 2008 he released his debut Album on Kling Klong named Word Of Mouth.
It was the next step in establishing him as an international player. The album was released in 12 countries and exported to all the world. Feedback from the media was overwhealming. This and the fact that Martin was supported with plays and respect by most of the international dj league lead to a more than expected number of sales.

All in all Word Of Mouth was a big success. Martins first single out of the album furthermore came along with mixes by Marc Romboy and Oliver Klein. The next follow up will be cave canem incl mixes by Gui Boratto, Robert babicz and Someone Else. Mixset: NR.040 with True Identity

By Fredrik • Jan 12th, 2010 • Category: Cuepoint Recommends, Mixsets

040

True Identity is the alias of Dutch DJ/Producer Leo Melcherts. After working under several different names, it was time for Leo to take a new path, and follow his passion in music.

“With True Identity I want to bring across the feeling that you get when you are totally in the moment and display who you really are. For me , this means making music that can give people a special feeling through melodies and of course; make them dance!”

His personal heroes reach from Michael Jackson to Trentemøller and from Daft Punk to Mozart.
“I have an open mind and I get inspired with music from around the world” “What I love in music and what I try to bring across are melodic lines with a phat beat underneath.”

With his first release (Steppenwolf) on Refune Records and several remixes and tracks in the pipeline, unique melodies and phat beats are exactly what can be expected from this promising new artist from Amsterdam.
With support from the international dj community for his productions, including support by Sebastian Ingrosso, the Swedish House Maffia and Pete Tong BBC Radio 1, it has only just begun for Leo.

Mixset: NR.039 with Dave Cortex

By Fredrik • Dec 16th, 2009 • Category: Cuepoint Recommends, Mixsets

039

Infectiously upbeat and powerfully emotive, the music of Washington D.C.’s Dave Cortex fuses funk and melodies with driving grooves to create unique yet relevant house beats.  And the world is taking notice. In just a few short years Dave’s releases have gained the support of a massive amount of A-list taste makers. Everyone from Top 100 DJs Tom Novy and Eddie Halliwell to Grammy winners Dirty Vegas.  His music has been charted by respected publications DJ Mag and Ibiza Voice, and heard on FM radio stations throughout the world. All this and he’s only been releasing music since 2007.

Dave’s story starts much earlier, of course.  A child of the 80’s, Dave grew up listening to the commercial sounds of the era, which heavily influences his music today.  In high school he discovered house music thanks to Daft Punk’s ‘Around The World’, and he was soon enjoying other electronic acts such as The Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers.  It wasn’t long before Dave was attending raves and learning to DJ himself! In the early 21st century, Dave rose to prominence locally by hosting his own parties and winning several area DJ competitions.  He quickly caught the attention of DC’s largest promotion companies and nightclubs, and was frequently invited to perform as the opening DJ for artists such as BT, Josh Wink, and Roger Sanchez.  Dave was often booked at the famed Buzz parties at Nation - the US’s most renowned superclub night of the era; and he played other high-profile events such as Baltimore’s Starscape festival.  To this day, Dave Cortex’s memorable DJ sets consist of painstakingly long harmonic layerings that maximize energy while completely immersing the listener.

By the mid-2000’s, Dave felt he had done everything he could with local DJing and was no longer feeling challenged. So he decided to finally learn something that had long both fascinated and intimidated him:  music production. Taking a large break from the constant clubbing of his youth, Dave isolated himself and constantly worked on learning the art. After a few frustrating years, he eventually gained confidence in his abilities and saw his first release in 2007. Since then, Dave has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting up-and-coming producers today. His stand-out music takes influences from a wide variety of genres and rolls them up into one distinct sound that doesn’t fit nicely into any of the current genre definitions, and the result finds his tracks played by a very wide range of DJs. The key to Dave Cortex’s success is simple, he spends as much time as possible in his studio, loving his time with the craft, and is always trying to challenge himself and raise the bar. The future looks bright for this rising star.
